Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas to inform enslaved Americans of their freedom and that the Civil War had ended. General Granger’s announcement put the Emancipation Proclamation into effect, which had actually been issued by Abraham Lincoln two years earlier.
